Northern Cape is sparsely populated and in some sections, you could drive for hours without meeting anyone. It is famous for its rugged landscapes, nature reserves and wildlife, rich mining history, and blue skies.
It is home to the Khoisan, descendants of the San and the Khoikhoi people. It is also home to the Nama people, a semi-nomadic group following the same migratory route for thousands of years.
Northern Cape is well known for producing almost all of South Africa’s manganese. Tungsten, zinc, lead, asbestos, iron ore, and limestone are also mined here. Mining is an important industry in the Province.
Apart from the above mentioned, the province has major copper mines at Nababeep, Okiep, and Aggeneys. Diamonds and other precious stones are also mined in the arid region of Namaqualand, along the Atlantic Coast.
Northern Cape is also known for the vineyards in the north, which grow under irrigation alongside other crops such as wheat, alfalfa (lucerne), cotton, peanuts, and citrus fruits.

The Richtersveld Transfrontier Park is one of the places where you can learn about the lifestyle of the Nama people. They are semi-nomadic and live by hunting and gathering.
Their huts can be seen within the folds and valleys of the Richtersveld mountain desert. The movable huts constructed using branches and hand-woven reed mats are known as !haru oms in Nama or matjieshuise in Afrikaans. The Nama people keep their traditions alive through dancing, storytelling, warm hospitality and great food.
The San community is also known to occupy the Northern Cape. The San live by hunting using bows and poisoned arrows. They continue to occupy ancestral land inside the Nyae Nyae Conservancy. The community is known for the rock paintings depicting their ways of life and spiritual beliefs.
Children in the San communities grew up copying what their parents did, including playing with little bows for the boys and foraging for food by the girls. They are skilled craftspeople and make beads from ostrich shells, skin and leather bags, walking sticks, and smoking pipes.
A boy becomes a man, among the San community, after he kills a large antelope, preferably an Eland. Once the eland is killed, it is skinned and the fat from the animal’s throat and collarbone is made into a broth.
On the other hand, a girl is isolated in her hut after her first menstruation. The women of the tribe perform the Eland Bull Dance where they imitate the mating behaviour of the Eland cows.
A man will play the part of the Eland bull, usually with horns on his head. This ritual is believed to keep the girl beautiful, free from hunger and thirst and peaceful. As part of the marriage ritual, the man gives the fat to the girl’s parents with which the girl is later anointed.
The Nama people of this region have a complicated wedding ritual that can last for several months. First, the man has to discuss his intentions with his family, who after agreeing recommend which costumes to adorn as they accompany him to the place where the girl lives.
Before arrival, the girl’s family prepares the meeting place by laying down skins on the ground for comfortable sitting and discussion.
The first ritual is upon arrival of the man at the girl’s home. It is the door opening ritual and if welcomed certain rituals take place to determine how well the two know each other, including asking the man about marks on the girl’s skin.
After a few days, the bride’s family visits the groom’s clan. If an agreement is reached the date of the wedding is announced and the engagement announced to the whole community.
After this, preparations for the wedding can take up to a whole year.
